I had been wanting to get my college degree for some time now, but there always seemed to be something more important or demanding of my time and energy. 22 months ago, I finally embarked on the path to a lifelong dream: A college degree. Now, at 48 years of age, I completed my Associate program and plunged right into my Bachelor program. My goal is a bachelor degree by the time I reach my 50th birthday. So far, I’m on track.

The internet service at my employer was unavailable for nearly two days. Upon arriving at work yesterday, an announcement sent by the Information Technology team described the outage and that they were working on it with the hopes if it being restored by the end of the day. Yet, after arriving for work this morning and seeing that internet service was still unavailable, I was reminded of a conversation between my enrollment counselor and me nearly two years ago: He said: “What would you do if your internet service became unavailable and you had an assignment due?”

Funny…that scenario was intended for the home-internet failure scenario not the other way around. My response, of course, was that I would hop in the car and head to work because the internet service there is always available.

Not.

It became painfully obvious how much I rely on my internet connection at work to allow me to quickly accomplish tidbits of my schoolwork during breaks on the job. Five minutes here and there, during lunch and just as I shut down for the evening… I was unable to do any of that yesterday and most of today.

(Not that I should be…ahem…)

The internet service was restored today about an hour ago. I immediately dropped what I was doing and logged into my classroom…what did I miss in the discussion forum? Had my instructor posted any grades? Any comments? What were those website links I needed for this week’s assignment?

It is like an obsessive-compulsive disorder…I need my classroom fix several times a day. Is that weird?

About 66bearess

I had been wanting to get my college degree for some time now, but there always seemed to be something more important or demanding of my time and energy. Whether it was the chaos of all the children living with us at the same time, or the demand of extracurricular school activities for them, or the stress of making ends meet in an economy slump, the dream of higher education always seemed to remain on the back burner. Now, at 48 years of age, I have achieved the half-way mark and earned my associate degree. Without a break, I am pushing on for my bachelor degree because I am determined to reach my goal: A bachelor degree by the time I reach my 50th birthday. So far, I’m still on track.
