In September 2007, eLearners.com teamed up with Woman’s World magazine to bring women readers an opportunity to write an essay to receive a $1,500 scholarship to attend school online. The response was overwhelming, with over 1,200 entrants from across the country.

Each woman had her own unique story, but one significant trend became very apparent—many of the entrants were single moms. In fact, almost half of the applicants were divorced or never-married working mothers raising children alone.

Single moms represent nearly 13 million people in the United States and only 16% have a college degree. Those who are unable to advance their education because of their life circumstances are forever caught in a cycle of underemployment—a situation that requires immediate attention.
