Barry Manilow's Music & Passion, Las Vegas, December 2005

Two days after I married my husband, my friends and I hopped in the car and drove to Las Vegas where I had free tickets to a PBS taping of Barry Manilow's Music & Passion show. We had excellent seats and I was able to reach out and shake his hand during one of the songs.

Had a great time!

Spurred by personal tragedy, Chris, a now-single mother of two from Oklahoma perservered by immersing herself in her education to finish a bachelor's degree.

Currently employed as a writer and editor at a local university, she initially began her college career after graduating high school in 1969. While trying to keep both a full- and part-time job, Chris only managed to finish a handful of classes. She ended up withdrawing before finshing her degree, got married, and had two children, a son and a daughter.

“I really didn't know what I wanted to do back then,” says Chris, 56, who then began her online education in 2002.

Her husband passed away before she earned her bachelor's degree in 2005 from the College of Liberal Studies at University of Oklahoma. In spite of everything she and her family had been through, the following year, Chris decided to continue her educational pursuits and returned to begin a master's program in adult and higher education. She expects to complete her graduate studies in about two years. Currently, she is simply relishing the distance learning experience.

Helen, 50, Andover, VT - Helen has given her heart and soul most of her life to her foster children, each with special needs. But, at age 50, she wants to make a different mark on this world - as a paralegal. The credentials would allow her to work as an aide in the classroom or go on to study law. At 50, looking for a new adventure, she is ready to conquer the world.

"I have always felt that it is an important part of who I am to shed light on the path for others. Teaching, building hope, encouraging while brightening the way, those were the attributes I strived for," said Helen Gordon. My name is Melissa H. I am 38 years old. My story goes something like this: After high school, I thought that I wasn’t ready for college. I moved to another state with the man who would soon become my husband. When we came back home I took a few courses at a traditional university and then life took hold. We had two children and we moved to a rural area. When the kids were small I decided to become a nurse. There was an LPN program at a community college nearby and I enrolled and did well. Two years later at the same community college I took courses to become an RN. The courses were offered over a closed circuit television and the practical portion was done 90 miles away. I graduated with an associate’s degree in nursing. I’ve been working as an RN in a rural Emergency Department ever since.

Then about 3 years ago I decided to further my education by obtaining my bachelor’s of science in nursing. The community college I attended earlier does not offer a bachelor’s degree so I had to look elsewhere. As I said earlier, I live in a rural area. The nearest metropolitan area is about 65 miles away. I am divorced and working full time. The thought of adding a commute to my schedule was unthinkable. It would also be difficult for me to change my work schedule to accommodate a school schedule. It was after much thought that I realized that online learning would be the most practical solution for my situation.

I researched my options and settled on the university that offered all the courses online and the practical portions in the students’ area. It didn’t hurt that my dream in college had been to attend this prestigious university. And so it goes that I am now in the final stages of my degree from the University of Michigan-Flint.

My children are now 13 and 17 with tons of activities and commitments. I’m a fairly new homeowner making improvements, and a social butterfly to boot. Online learning gives me enough freedom to continue my commitments, while providing me with the education I desire.

Hi! My name is Roz and I am 44 and have been married for 17 years, with five children.

My husband is disabled (he has muscular dystrophy) and therefore does not work. We have four sons (14, 12, 10 and 6) and one daughter (age 3).

I have worked for the city of Houston for 15 years. I am now in school in order to obtain my Bachelor of Science in Psychology online from Liberty University.
